Saladin class destroyer
During the four years war of 2241-2244 starfleet built many ships of the Nelson class scouts. These small, single nacelle ships were thrown into action despite a rather light armament. Suffering high losses and leading starfleet too conclude that the traditional scout ship was to lightly armed for its battle line roles.
The initial solution was to up-arm the initial Nelson class, which would become the Hermes scout. However this was quickly judged tho be insufficient in light of losses in the fleet. Thus starfleet issued a requirement in 2243 for a heavily armed new class, tentatively dubbed "destroyer", to be built in 2244.
With a focus on torpedoes for attacking larger vessels in a fleet action, and sufficient phasers to engage enemy vessels of similar size with a decent chance of winning in a stand up fight.
The Saladin class would enter service just after the war in 2246. Quickly filling the ranks for the new destroyer type created in the fleet in 2247.
The class would eventually see over 200 built in three subclasses. With production lasting until the 2260s. The class gave good service, and was well liked by its crews. Though somewhat hampered by its single nacelle, which allowed only short burst of high speed.
The ships fulfilled the fleets requirement of being cheap and well armed for their size. But by the 2270s starfleet had moved on and built the bigger and better Akula class. Gradually phasing out the Saladin solids over the next decades.
Many of the ships would be passed on to Federation member states for their own navies. Serving in these roles well into the 2350s.
