LONG POST AHEAD
I find it quite interesting how my greatest fear turned into one of my most favourite things ever.
As a little kid, I used to be absolutely terrified by aliens. Ghosts, monsters, not so much. Aliens though - oh dear. It was enough for me to hear the X-Files theme, or catch a glimpse of some documentary on alien abductions. I had a petrifying fear of aliens that made it hard to fall asleep at night. I didn't even feel comfortable looking at something as adorable as E.T.
Looking back at this fear, I think it had little to do with scary physical appearance or powers of aliens and a lot to do with being ALMOST human, whether it's intelligence or body shape (I would probably die if I watched "Invasion of the body snatchers" at that time). As a child I was also afraid of robots - not some scary robots, but those who looked exactly like humans. I think it was the idea of something unknown, slightly similar to a human being, yet different, existing somewhere and maybe even looking at me, without me knowing about it.
At some point though that fear disappeared, I am not sure when and why. I changed my view on aliens completely. Obviously, Mr. Spock is a nice, gentle and kind type of alien, but I am also a fan of yautja or xenomorphs who are far from gentle and kind. Knowing that space is so vast and strange, we can imagine practically any life form and it could, at least theoretically, exist. The idea of aliens is very interesting to explore. We can think of them as curious, sophisticated beings who are looking for creatures similar to themselves, in order to learn and develop as a society, maybe form some bonds. We can also see them as cold, cruel killing machines, intelligent or not, equipped with technology and power far beyond anything we can imagine; how do we, with our limited possibilities, face such danger? Both scenarios are equally... fascinating.
