TRAINING TO FAILURE by @apfau - Despite what a lot of people believe (including myself for a very long time), lifting to failure is not necessary to build muscle. In fact, training to failure too often can actually hinder results. - For compound lifts like deadlifts and squats, training to failure is a great way to get injured. You don’t build strength by constantly testing your maxes. You build it by training with sub maximal weights and constantly increasing the weight and reps over time. - The injury risk is obviously not as great for isolation exercises like bicep curls. Failing reps and pushing it to the limit can be be helpful for hypertrophy work and creating maximal oxidative stress. However, once you hit failure on a set, that muscle is going to be severely more fatigued and limited for the rest of the workout. If you burn yourself out on one set, the rest of your sets will suffer. - In practice, I recommend stopping 1-2 reps short of failure on all exercises but especially compounds. Even on isolation exercises, I like to stop 1-2 reps short of failure. They join together into one tendon which passes over your kneecap. The Rectus Femoris also helps flex the hip⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They are a strong muscle group that often gets overly tight and pulls hard on the lonely tendon trying to hold them together at the bottom. Stretching, foam rolling and barbell smashing them will help loosen them up if they are getting tight⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I would suggest that you put the majority of your focus on front squats, back squats and lunges when training your quads. The leg press can suffice and a narrower, lower foot position will target them more. Using this tactic or the leg extension machine should mostly be done by people who either are doing bodybuilding and want to isolate their quads or if a health professional has advised them to do so.
