Did you know that National Milk Day was on Saturday, January 11? Right Steps Dennis Burton celebrated Monday with a visit from Buttercup the cow from the Dairy Bar at the Indiana State Fair. The toddler, multi-age, and preschool classrooms got to partake in a milk tasting test. All of the children received goodies from the Indiana Dairy Farmers and American Dairy Association Indiana. And every class received a book and poster about Buttercup and her day (milk from cow to consumption)! @indairy • • • #childdevelopment #earlylearning #highqualitychildcare

Today, more than 6 million youth have received diagnoses. And the fastest-growing segment of the population with respect to diagnosis and medication treatment is now adults, particularly women. The current numbers are staggering. For all children aged 4-17, the rate of diagnosis is now one in nine. For those over nine years of age, more than one boy in five has received a diagnosis. Among youth with a current diagnosis, nearly 70 percent receive medication. U.S. rates are higher than anywhere else in the world. (Source additudemag.com. Self care? What does that even mean? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let’s be honest for a second okay. I know the idea of taking care of YOU sounds well, exhausting right? I get it. You go non-stop, 24/7. You probably are running low on sleep and high on coffee. The last thing you have time for is to add yet another thing to your plate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let’s just take a pause. Read that last paragraph again. It’s okay, I’ll wait. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did you read it again? Now, the last thing I want to do is add to your plate. But I think we can both agree that you need to include more “take care of me” in your daily routine, and I am going to show you just how easy and effortless that can be. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First, I want you to think of a small, I’m talking short, tiny, slim. A sliver of an activity that takes 5 min or less. Something that just makes your inner voice sing a big “yaaaassss”. Next I want you to do that activity every day for the next 10 days. Each day after you’ve done it, I want you to make a mental note, or go old fashion and pen and paper that stuff. But I want you to notice how spending just 5 min on something you love makes you feel. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you have no idea where to start or feel confused about this whole thing, don’t worry I’ve got you! Click the link in my bio @myspectrumofjoy for my guide on how to effortlessly take care of you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Because at the end of the day the ones we care about the most in this world deserve and need the best version of ourselves. So let’s hold that close to our hearts and take care of us, for them. ❤️

Bea is wanting to try things out on her own more and more. It is actually pretty tricky... because well, if I do things for her its faster! And neater! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But here are some mantras I love that foster confidence and independence. I can't seem to be reminded of them enough myself so wanted to share. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📣"Try not to do anything for your child that they can do on their own" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📣"Freedom to explore now makes a big difference later." Research has correlated the amount of freedom children have to explore with their later cognitive abilities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📣"Repetition is learning" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📣"Break the 'react and control' cycle" Your child's exploring can occasionally get them into something harmful, messy, or inconvenient, but it is also good to realize that their brain is craving real-world experiences ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📣"Give your toddler choices" Most of the time, I'm still making choices for my kids. Trying to find times when they can make a choice for themselves can really help. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Blog post link in Bio. . . . . . . #montessoriathome #montessoritoddler #montessoribaby #practicallife #montessorikids #montessoritoys #montessoriteacher #montessoriactivities #montessoriinspired #homeeducation #childdevelopment #toddleractivitiesathome #simplicityplay #creativeplay #imaginativeplay #playideas #playbasedlearning #openendedplay #playmatters #littlelearners

👋🏾Don't forget to follow @southbaymommyandme for support on mindful, gentle mothering.⁣ ⁣ 💜As a follow up to yesterday's post, I wanted to talk about this concept of feeling seen.⁣ ⁣ 👉🏼When we feel 'seen', we feel understood. We feel 'felt', if you can imagine what he feels like to have your experience acknowledged, appreciated, and understood by another.⁣ ⁣ 👉🏼It feels great to feel noticed. It makes us feel softer, more connected, more engaged. When we feel seen, we begin to develop a sense of trust that relationships are safe. We enjoy, and are driven by, the need to feel safe and connected.⁣ ⁣ 👉🏼For these reasons (and so many more), helping our children feel seen is crucial to their development. Here I have suggestions that I use with my own child on how to show up for him and help him feel seen.⁣ ⁣ 👉🏼Am I perfect at it? Not at all! But I do my best to be predictable and consistent. And I trust that that is enough.⁣ ⁣ ✅I will be releasing a short course on promoting empathy in a few weeks, which is at the heart of 'seeing' our children. Stay tuned.⁣ ⁣ 👇🏽What do you do to help your child feel seen?

Have you ever felt guilty of taking time away from everything and everyone for yourself? ⁣ ⁣ DON’T! ⁣ ⁣ The biggest reason WHY I overcame emotional trauma, heartbreak, loss of faith, weight gain and anxiety of becoming a legal guardian to my sister, is because it took me one second to decide to put everything and everyone aside every day. ⁣ ⁣ I started small, starting with 5 minutes of uninterrupted time for myself to journal. ⁣ ⁣ 10 minutes of journaling and meditating. ⁣ ⁣ 15 minutes of journaling, meditating and learning how to let go. ⁣ ⁣ Those 15 minutes turned into 60 minutes after a few weeks. ⁣ ⁣ It’s not selfish to take time for yourself to work on being an exceptional you ❤️ ⁣ The most impactful time in your day, is the time you take for yourself in order to be exceptional in your job, relationships and most importantly, for yourself 💪🏻

My last and final Back-to-the-Basics tip for you guys is BOOKS! 📖 I told you it’d be simple ✌️ Consistent exposure to books 📚 at a young age has been proven to literally change the cortex of the brain 🧠 for the better for the rest of a child’s life. SO cool, in my book 😝 My top tips for adding books into your child’s daily routine ⤵️: . ✅ Most children are naturally interested in books. Let them flip through them on their own without worrying about the story at first. Start with board books (harder to destroy) for toddlers. I especially LOVE “touch-and-feel” books where they can interact with the book through their tactile sense. ✅ Include both reading out loud to your child and letting your child “read” on their own. This will simply be holding the book and beginning to turn the pages. Doing both of these things from birth/infancy is key. ✅ Re-reading the same book over and over again is actually a good thing. Linking this into a routine can work wonders, especially for toddlers and preschoolers. Try reading the same book or two before bed every night for a couple weeks. The predictability is calming and grounding for a child, and the repetition helps boost learning. ✅ Eventually, start to stop while reading and ask questions or point out things in the pictures while reading to your child. Ask them to label, repeat what’s happening, ask a question. If they’re not quite there yet, do it for them as a model. ✅ Remember, kids want to copy what they see you doing! Children who see their parents read are more likely to show an interest in reading. Just food for thought 😉 . Working on blog post to share my specific book recommendations with you guys, so stay tuned! Remember, any reading is good reading. It doesn’t matter if you have 3 or 3728373 books at home… all exposure is good exposure! 👏

@SkylarkLearning we believe the harder you try to hold on to something, the faster it runs away. Parents need to be able to 'love with an open hand' – to give their child time and space to make their own discoveries – and their own mistakes – in order to develop vital skills for learning and for life. This can be difficult at times, but Skylark Learning can help by providing parents with wonderfully crafted playsets that focus on fostering these important skills. ⠀ ‘My First Emotions’ helps very young children recognise, understand and manage their emotions, and prepares them for dealing with the emotions of others. The set is also a great support for parents, who have lately come under fire for overcontrolled, ‘helicopter’ parenting. Recent evidence shows that the more we try to cosset or over control our toddlers in an effort to protect them from life, the more likely the child is to develop behavioural and emotional problems later on. ⠀ Most recently, research by Dr Nicole Perry of the University of Minnesota published in the journal Development Psychology, found that helicopter parenting can negatively affect a child’s ability to manage his or her emotions and behaviour. “Our research showed that children with helicopter parents may be less able to deal with the challenging demands of growing up, especially with navigating the complex school environment.” ⠀ https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/jun/18/over-controlled-toddlers-grow-up-unable-to-cope ⠀ #health #wellbeing #healthy #childpsychology #childrenpsychologist #emotions #emotionaldevelopment #empathy #childhood #child #children #childdevelopment #lifewithkids #childhoodunplugged #parenting #parentingtips #dailyparenting #smartparenting #smartparents #parentingwin #parentingteam #gentleparenting #positiveparenting #HelikopterEltern #Helikopter #Eltern #kinder #psychologie #erziehung #Selbstkontrolle http://www.skylarkonline.com

When you're tired, sleep may come more easily. Why is being tired at bedtime important for autism?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We've talked about kids with autism having weaker circadian rhythms, they need stronger sleep cues. It's also important to time sleep at the right moment - you may need to push bedtime to make this happen. Too early and you have a crazy bedtime, too late and you've missed that optimal sleep window!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you time it right, you are pairing bed with feeling tired and then you're in the right position to teach kids how to fall asleep. It's important that bed is where you go when you're tired, not awake - awake is for the rest of the day! We call this ꜱᴛɪᴍᴜʟᴜꜱ ᴄᴏɴᴛʀᴏʟ. If bed is paired with screen time, being awake for too long, or engaging in disruptive behaviour, you likely have a faulty stimulus control. This will make it much harder to achieve a healthy bedtime routine!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✅ If you need support in this area, contact us! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #abamapleridge #WestCoastABA #bcbasdosleep

Balls! Big, small, heavy, light, textured or smooth - they are a brilliant investment for your baby. I love these coloured ones because they are small enough to be handled, light enough to be thrown without damaging anything and are so versatile! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are three simple activity ideas that your baby might enjoy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1) Set up a colour sorting activity, whereby your baby can retrieve the balls and place them in the matching coloured buckets. This would help develop their visual discrimination skills and their gross motor skills as they crawl, reach and throw the balls into their containers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2) You could invite your toddler to balance the balls on top of upturned cardboard tubes - helping them develop hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and fine motor control. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3) Using a straw, blow the balls. This will be great fun in itself - depending on their age, they might need your puffing power to move the ball, but the act of trying will help strengthen the oral muscles needed for eating and speech. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For more fun, easy to do activities have a look at @busybrainsactivitypacks (link in bio)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #busybrainsactivitypacks #ballgames #babysctivities #babyactivitiesathome #babyplayideas #babyplaytime #playingislearning #playischildswork #toddlerplayideas #thingstodowithtoddlers #playideasforkids #ideasforkids #ideasforparents #ideasforbabies #learningthroughplay #learningthruplay #learningisfun #childdevelopment #ukbaby #ukmummy #ukparents #playideas #playideasfortoddler #havefuntogether #playtogether #learntogether #activityideas #braindevelopment #ballskills #ballsarefun

Let’s talk about joint attention! It is one of those “pre-language skills” I’ve talked about!💕 . It’s on clear display in this video (enjoy the baby giggles) and, is a foundational skill for developing language! . Do you see how baby boy is switching his gaze between big sister, Mama (behind the camera) and the toy? Do you see his smile and hear his giggle as he shares the enjoyment? That’s joint attention and referencing! . Joint attention is when two people share a common interest in an experience or object (like a toy). This skill starts at 9 months and is well established by 14 months. . Communication begins with this shared attention and engagement! Your little one learns from their environment and from interacting with others! That is why joint attention is key! . And, guess what? Children learn this most easily through play and interaction with the adults who are most important in their lives (like you)! . If children have difficulty with the development of this skill, they often struggle understanding and using language. . Knowledge is power! Knowing this information can help you target this skill with your little one from very early on (during simple play activities, singing songs, reading books, walking outside, etc). . And, understanding the importance of this skill can help you seek out support for your child if needed!

Want to give your early reader an age appropriate reading challenge? Your child is a developing reader. They are progressing faster than they’re aging. The books for their age are “too easy”. But you don’t want to move them into middle-grade novels, what do you do? Give them NON-FICTION options. Non-fiction books are contextually challenging. Because they are fact-driven rather than emotion-driven, they can be harder to follow and harder to engage with. I often suggest going down a level with choosing a non-fiction book because of the comprehension challenges non fiction presents. So if re-reading or simply reading more still doesn’t feel like enough, start introducing non-fiction to the pile. It will also give you a better understanding of the different levels in which we can measure a child’s true reading engagement. How do you promote advanced reading with your child? . . . . . #confidenceiskey #literacymatters #kidsyoga #yoga #yogaposes #childdevelopment #developmentalyoga #earlyreadingskills #literacymatters #toddleryoga #earlyreaders #languagedevelopment #vocabularybuilding #bookgram #bookworm #bookstagram #books #childrenslibrarian #bookclub #bookcommunity #lovetoread #library #reading #yogamom #njlibraries #mindfulnessforkids #njmom #yogaforall #mommyyoga #raisingkids #parenting

🚗Puffy Paint🚗 - painting with cars - It’s one of the funniest activities for toddlers (1+)!!!! *All you need is shaving cream, food color, tighter paper and a lot of different small plastic cars. Give children to: 1. mix shaving cream with food color (I put a little bit of glitter everywhere because children love it!) 2. put car in cream and drive it on the paper. 3. make tire track and with time the paper will become a rice track, the perfect way to stimulate kid’s imagination. 4. at the end to wash everything alone...they will enjoy playing with water and in the same time feel helpful. And you will enjoy just to watch them 😉 📌 PROCESS ART Process art is not needing a specific end outcome when creating. It is so important to allow children to just do. Like sensory play, process art focuses on the learning in just allowing them to experiment with creating, using what is in front of them. They are learning from their actions and the results of their actions. So in this case, that different cars may make different tracks in the paint. That if you hold a car down firmly and roll it back and form quickly you may get a more solid, clear paint track, that is you weave the car in and out of the paint, you can make fun paint tracks. Have your children come to you asking about "World War III" or war in general? It's common for parents to feel confused about how to respond to these questions from thier children, and the desire to shelter children from upsetting events can be strong. However, we are seeing that children are increasingly reporting feeling helpless, scared or depressed when hearing the news and that children can see what is going on in the world. So here are a couple of tips to talking to your kids about war and violence: 1) Listen to your children's concerns and emotions about the situation. It's important to know these if you wish to address them with your children. 2) Make sure your child has a complete (age-appropriate) understanding of the situation. With rapidly progressing situations, like war, it's easy to only have a partial understanding of these situation.Talk to your children and fill in gaps in their understanding. Don't make assumptions about you children do or do not know. 3) Learn the facts about the situation. The more you as a parent know about a situation, the more answers you can give to your children. 4) Help your child feel prepared. This could be creating a family safety plan or just ensuring your children have important phone numbers memorized. Much like adults, children are less anxious if they feel prepared to handle a situation. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to helping children understand and process the world around them. If you have questions, consider contacting a mental health professional, or checking online resources for more tips. - - Image from pixabay - - #DrMaryamSays #Children #Development #BlackPsychologist #ChildDevelopment

Remember Edwin? This 4 year old boy who is always smiling and is his father’s proud. Now he is also proud of himself. “I learned the colors this week. For example, my ball is yellow and my sweater is blue.” Says Edwin, “Yellow is my favorite color!” Wouldn’t you feel proud of this clever boy too? Keep supporting ChildFund programs and help other hundred children like Edwin. #ChildGames #Childhood #Childsplay #ChildDevelopment #ChildFundMagicMoments #ChildFundHighlands #GuatemalaHighlands

Did you know that American kids and teens, ages 8 to 18, spend an average of more than seven hours a day looking at screens? Brain development, childhood obesity, attention span and other behavioral problems can stem from too much or poor quality screen time. Remember, you can ensure the quality of screen time through parental controls & never let screen time take the place of reading, playing, or problem solving. 📱💻⠀ ⠀ #ScreenTime #ChildDevelopment #Parenting #kineticedgept
